“The Göttingen Seven Monument, situated on Platz der Göttinger Sieben in Hanover, stands as a powerful tribute to a group of professors who dared to challenge royal authority in the 19th century. In 1837, King Ernest Augustus I of Hanover unilaterally revoked the liberal constitution that had been in place since 1833. This act sparked outrage among the populace, particularly within the academic community of the University of Göttingen. Seven professors, all esteemed figures in their respective fields, decided to take a stand against this blatant disregard for the rule of law. The consequences of their dissent were swift and severe. All seven professors were dismissed from their positions at the university. Three of them – Dahlmann, Gervinus, and Ewald – were even banished from the Kingdom of Hanover.”
